Inside Lorcana: A Look at the Gameplay

Disney's Lorcana: The First Chapter is scheduled to release in September of 2023, but news about the gameplay has yet to be published. Ravensburger, the game studio developing Lorcana, has unveiled various keywords the game will use.

Inks

Each card revealed belongs to one of six colors or Ink. If you are a Magic player, you will understand this quickly. Ravensburger has given some hints as to what each Ink type will do, but nothing official as be revealed. If not, each color or Ink focuses on something specific. The six Inks in Lorcana are:

  • Amber

  • Steel

  • Ruby

  • Sapphire

  • Emerald

  • Amethyst

Keywords

A few keywords have been unveiled as new cards teased the player base. There is no official definition of what the keywords will do within the rules of the games, but we can make some assumptions based on previous TCGs.

  • Banish - graveyard

  • Challenge - combat/declare combat

  • Challenger - an ability that modifies a character bases stats

  • Evasive - Only characters with Evasive can challenge this character.

  • Exert - "tapping" or rotating a card 90 degrees to show the card has been used.

  • Lead By Example - During your turn, whenever this character banishes another character in a challenge, your other characters get +1 "pip" this turn.

  • Rush - characters with Rush can challenge the same turn they are played.

  • Shift - variable cost to play on top of a named character

  • Sinister Plot - this character gets +1 "pip" for every other Villain character you have in play.

  • Summoning Sickness - characters without the keyword "rush" cannot challenge the same turn they are played.

  • Ward - Opponents can't choose this character except to challenge

Let's put it all together using "Stitch Rock Star," focusing on a few items below.

  • Resource Cost: 6

  • Ink: Amber

Win Condition?

The "pip" values on various cards remind me of the system that Keyforge uses. Once you acquire a certain number of "pips," the player could trade them in for a "key." The first player to collect three keys wins the game.

Looking at the Illumineer's Trove and Jump In Gift Set, the Lorcana player will have 15 or 34 tokens, respectively. The Jump In Gift Set is closer to a Duel Deck where two players can play a game of Lorcana. Assuming the tokens are "pips," we can conclude that the person that collects 15-17 "pips" wins the game.
