Disney Lorcana Mechanics RELEASED!

Disney’s Lorcana Mechanics Revealed: Monday, April 10th, 2023, Lorcana spoilers were revealed when a user posted Game Trade Magazine, a publication that an LGS will use to purchase products from a supplier. Later that day, the entire rules were revealed as well. We will perform a quick dive into the revealed mechanics.

Playing The Game

Win Condition

Players will race against each other to collect “lore.” The first player to collect 20 “lore” wins the game. The primary way to collect “lore” is to send characters in play on a quest (Additional information on questing below).

Players will play the best of 3 to determine the overall winner.

Deck Requirements

  • A deck must have at least 60 cards in it.

  • A deck cannot contain more than four copies of any single card. Note: Elsa - Snow Queen and Elsa - Queen Regent are considered two cards, so you can have four of each.

  • Your deck can only contain cards from one or two inks.

Game Setup

  1. Shuffle your deck

  2. Set the lore tracker to zero. The use of D20 dice or tokens can be used to track lore.

  3. Draw seven cards for your starting hand.

  4. Alter/mulligan cards. Players can mulligan any number of cards from their hand to the bottom of their deck and draw up to their hand size of seven. This can only be done ONE TIME! Shuffle your deck. Note: This step is skipped in your first game.

  5. Determine the first player by flipping a coin or rolling a die.

Playing The Game

Disney’s Lorcana will have two parts: Beginning Phase and Main Phase. Each player takes their whole turn before passing to the next player.

Inkwell

Inkwell is where you will put your ink cards, facedown. The cards in the inkwell will be utilized to pay for the costs of the card you play from your hand. Every card in your inkwell represents one ink, no matter what’s on the front.

Cards placed into the inkwell stay there for the rest of the game. None of the text in front of the cards matters, which is by you place the card facedown revealed the card back.

Character cards will be the only cards that can be turned into ink. The inkwell will be under the active play area, similar to Magic The Gathering.

Beginning Phase

  1. Ready - Read your exerted (tapped) cards by turning them upright.

  2. Set - Check for effects that happen at the start of your turn and follow their instructions.

  3. Draw - Draw a card from the top of your deck. The first player skips this step on their first turn.

Main Phase

Disney’s Lorcana Exert

  1. Once per turn, put a card facedown into your inkwell anytime.

  2. Take any action in any order below:

    1. Play a card.

    2. Use a character ability that doesn’t require them to exert (tap).

    3. Use an item ability

    4. Take an action with a character that’s been in play since the start of your turn. These include:

      1. Quest - exert (tap) a glimmer and gain the number of “lore” on the card. Note: You cannot quest with a character the same turn you play them.

      2. Challenge an opponent’s exerted character. When challenging, you select a ready character, declare the challenge to your opponent’s exerted character, then exert (tap) your character. Damage is persistent for both characters. Each character does X damage where X is their Strength. A character is banished if they have damage equal to or greater than their Willpower. A banished character is sent to the discard pile.

      3. Use an ability that requires them to exert (tap). Some abilities will have an exert cost, resource cost, or both.

Disney’s Lorcana Challenge

Multiplayer Games

Lorcana can be played with two or more players. All rules described apply except for who the next player turn is. The player to the left of the first player takes the next turn.

Whenever an ability requires more than one player to do something simultaneously, start with the player whose turn it is and go clockwise.

Lorcana League & Game Night

League play will consist of 12 weeks of events (hosted by an LGS), broken up into three rounds. Lorcana players can earn league points by participating in Disney Lorcana matches (win or lose) and through Lorcana-related activities such as teaching someone how to play. Prizes are awarded to most of the participants. Those with the most points in each round are given a modest additional prize.

Ravensburger plans a higher level organized play—additional details to come.
